Title: RDS Readout to PC?
Post by: Mippen on 04 Jul 2004, 18:44
Has anyone here experemented with taking RDS info?
I would like to use my none IP_bus radio, M7400RDS, but I have no service manual.
It's a little bit hard to find any data signal to interface on but I guess it is there somewhere.

If a newer RDS radio is easier to interface that could be a solution to.
Hope for help.

Thanks..

Well, there is alot of info on the net, but no open sources... I think you should try doing this with a PIC or ATMEL  MCU.  Me could help you, just ask a question:)

I mean what exactly do you want to build: a PC RDS decoder or to connect your radio to the PC and use its internal RDS?

Hi

I need a PC-decoder to read RDS information.
I hoped that it would be possible to do without expensive "kits".

The project is to listen on Traffic information and process these with email etc.

Have you done this?
How did you proceed?

/best regards

Michael

Well, I haven't done anything like this before but sure it won't be very hard to do... What do you mean 'expensive "kits"'? I mean to do this with a microcontroller PIC which just transfrers the information from a radio (with RDS) and transforms it into a asyncronos serial interface. The only problem is that I do not write software for PC yet, only firmware for microcontrollers... If you have any idea, write it down...I'll try to think of something :D

How do you take the RDS information from the radio?
I have no problems with writing PC software.

If I could get the RDS information on a serial interface, then most of my problems is solved.
How should I proceed to make a "RDS to Serial" interface?
Where do you interface the radio?

Please give me more information on this interface.

It strongly depends on your radio.

I'm working on the problem now, I am trying to develop an RDS decoder...then I'll try to implement a serial link for comunication with the PC. 8)

Check out these links:

http://www.esslinger.de/download/index.htm
http://home.pi.be/~wijnherm/deco.html
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/ybnet/cartedecod_uk_gif.html

Well, they all use TDA7330 (which is a RDS decoder) but I am trying to understand what interface is used for decoding the two output lines of the decoder (RCL and RDATA), maybe its I2C...

Now I see it's useless to build such a device (for me :( ), it's already done by lots of people...
See this:

My problem is that I can't find the TDA7330 in my radio.
Is there any known relabeld IC's in pioneer radios that could be the RDS decoder?

I have a M7400RDS that I would like to use.

But I'm still willin to help you building it...ask if you dont understand something 8)

Get rid of that M7400RDS, I couldn't find any info about how it works... Try TDA7330 or SAA6579T...It's much easier!

M7400 is the number on the Pioneer radio I hoped to be reused.
I havn't found any circuit in this that could be the RDS IC.

I guess that I have to look after another radio to use that has one of the 2 IC's that you posted.

You cannot find RDS IC because it's sowtware implemented in the microprocessor of the radio.

Okey...

Is there more radios then the "Pioneer M7400RDS" that has the RDS implemented in the main CPU?
This is good to know when hunting for other objects to use.

Yes, lots of new radios are this way...Try some older radios (like VW or Philips), but the best solution is to buy a RDS IC.

Okej... If I get hold of a RDS IC, how does I hook this up against the radio?

Well, I gave you some links, I think that the last one contained a schematic digram...you connect the RDS decoder to the MPX signal (this is the output of the FM demodulator, which means between the Tuner and the Stereo-decoder).

You can find SAA6579T in VW Gamma-3 (made by Philips)...

So I just found out that there is a whole RDS board in VW GAMMA-3, also there is ready to use RDS PCBs at conrad.de (.com). Just if you could find any RDS board I'll tell you how to connect it to a radio and PC 8) .
I have VW GAMMA-3 here, but unfortunately you are very far awa from here :?
